Planning for Your Cat’s Future
As devoted pet parents, our furry pals mean the world to us – but have we paused to think about what could happen to them if we were suddenly unable to care for them? It's difficult to consider, but it's crucial to have a plan in place just in case.
A short-term plan:
Life can throw unexpected curveballs like sudden illness or changes in living situations, which might leave our pets vulnerable. That's why it's essential to get ready now for any unforeseen circumstances.
Create a pet emergency kit with essentials like a carrier, bottled water, food, medications, and copies of medical records. Don't forget current photos of your pet, feeding schedules, your vet's contact info, and some comforting items like pet beds and toys.
Identify at least two trustworthy friends or family members who can step in as temporary caregivers if needed. Give them access to your home and let them know where to find the emergency kit.
Make sure your neighbours, friends and relatives are aware of how many pets you have and who your emergency caregivers are. It's also helpful for caregivers to have each other's contact info.
Keep a wallet card with your emergency caregivers' names and numbers handy, and consider putting up removable notices on your doors or windows to alert emergency responders about your pets.
Looking at the long-term:
If there ever comes a time when you can't care for your cat permanently, it's essential to plan for their future based on their lifespan.
Choose caregivers wisely and discuss your expectations openly with them. Discuss financial expectations regarding pet care costs and insurance.
Also name alternate caregivers in case your first choice becomes unable or unwilling to take your cat.
Stay in touch with your chosen caregivers over time, as circumstances can change. Ensure the arrangements remain and adjust accordingly.
To support your cat's future caregiver, consider setting aside funds or establishing a pet trust.
