Socializing Shy Cats and Kittens

Please keep in mind that socializing a shy cat takes a great deal of patience. Each cat will come around at their own pace regardless of their age – although generally the younger socialize the fastest. You have to follow the cat at their own pace and don't expect too much too soon.

Use these tips to help a cat overcome their shyness:

  • Make a point to work with them daily, preferably multiple times a day, for about 10-15 minutes each session. If you can, interact with the cat at the same time each day, so it begins to anticipate your visits.

  • Keep the cat in a room with limited or designated hiding places. Equip the room with beds, food, water, litter box, and toys. Make sure that this room is quiet and calm and that there are no other animals or small children in this room.

  • Always talk softly and move slowly around them. When making eye contact, blink slowly or close your eyes.

  • Food is a very big motivator. Start with a plate of food a few feet away from you. Then simply sit with them several times a day. Gradually move the food closer as they become more comfortable, let them come closer when they are ready. NEVER pull a cat out of their hiding spot!

  • Create positive food experiences for the cat while you are with them. Offer enticing treats like tuna or sardines. Be sure that you don’t give them these items at any other time except when you are present, so they learn to associate you with the food (and a positive experience).

  • When they seem comfortable with you in the room, let them sniff your hand and watch their body language closely. If at any point, they back away and/or hiss or swat, calmly move away. Always respect their boundaries and give them space if needed.

  • Once they're comfortable with your presence, introduce gentle play with toys. Let them approach the toy on their own terms and gradually involve yourself in the play. As they become more relaxed, incorporate petting into the playtime, starting with the cheeks and head.

The key is to associate fun and positive feelings with human touch. Once your cat has warmed up to you, that reward will far outweigh the hard work you have put in, and you and your cat will have a very special bond.
