Why Do Cats Land on Their Feet?

They say that a cat always lands on its feet and most of the time, it's true. Cats have amazing agility and balance.

However, it isn't always the case. The longer the distance they fall, the more likely they are to be injured. Patchy, one of our sweet foster cats, is an example of a cat with damaged ligaments due to a fall from a high surface (she has recovered well, but will always have a limp).
