Resources: Cat Care and Behaviour

Cats Not Getting Along?

Cats can sometimes struggle to get along for various reasons, including undersocialization, territorial instincts, personality clashes, or negative associations with each other due to past experiences.

Additionally, changes in behavior could indicate underlying medical issues. Different types of aggression, such as maternal aggression or play aggression, require specific management techniques.

To manage aggression between cats, it's important to never let them fight it out

Neuter them
Intact males are more prone to aggressive behavior

Reduce competition between the cats
Provide multiple, food bowls, beds and litter boxes in different areas of your home

Give them the space they need
Provide additional hiding spots and perches

Reward desired behavior
Use praise or treats when you see them interacting in a friendly manner

Mild aggression can be addressed by separating the cats temporarily and gradually reintroducing them (see our pet introductions resource for a step-by-step guide), while severe aggression may require longer separation and more controlled reintroduction sessions. In some cases, seeking help from a professional behaviorist may be necessary. If cats can't peacefully coexist despite all efforts, it might be best to keep them permanently separated or find a new home for one of them to reduce chronic stress and tension.
