Mary's Story: Why It Is Important to Foster!

Each year dozens of kittens are born into life on the street, filled with fear and facing a questionable chance of survival. These are not feral cats. They have no street-smarts at birth, only the protection of their mother, as long as their mother can provide for them.

Mary is one of those kittens. She was one of six beautiful kittens born to her mother who lived on the street. People for Animals successfully trapped the mother to prevent her from having future litters on the street. Although the mother showed potential for adoption, she had six kittens to protect so she had to be put back in the alley where she had given birth to her babies.

Eventually, all the kittens except for one were trapped and neutered. It’s believed that the one that was never caught likely didn’t survive the winter. Sadly, all but two of the kittens were released back to the street because there weren’t enough foster homes available to care for them, an all too common dilemma for cat rescue groups.

One of the fortunate ones who found a home was Libby, Mary’s sister, who has grown into a playful bundle. She loves to race around the house, but looks for a warm lap when she’s craving a quiet moment. The volunteer who adopted Libby often reflects on the fate of the two sisters: “It breaks my heart to think of Mary, when I think of the life Libby has. Libby has so much joy to share, while Mary was never given that chance.”

Spring is the season of new life. Consider giving one of our kittens a chance. Contact People for Animals if you are able to foster a kitten and give you and a furry friend a better life. Please contact us at pfasask@gmail.com if you can help.
